Police are baffled over the cause of death of an Austrian tourist who was found dead on a beach chair Koh Samui Saturday morning.

A hotel guard informed Bo Phut Provincial Police Station at around 7:00 about the tragic discovery who sent Pol Capt Daenchai Buntam to investigate the case.

Pol Capt Daenchai, medical staff from Koh Samui Hospital and local rescue volunteers found 43-year-old Florian Schweinjer (spelling of last name unconfirmed) dead on the beach. He was lying on a pillow next to a wooden sun lounger in front of a hotel.

The man was found wearing a long-sleeved shirt, a white wool jacket, and shorts. A brief examination of the body on the scene by medical staff did not detect any injuries or signs of a struggle. They believed the man had been dead for about 3 to 4 hours.

On the sun lounger, police collected belongings of the deceased as evidence, among them a can of soda, a wrist watch, and two rings. In a small bag, Pol Capt Daenchai found 6,700 baht in cash and a bottle of methadone which is commonly used as a substitution drug for heroin addicts.

The Austrian had reportedly arrived in Thailand on March 28. Koh Samui Hospital has been commissioned to conduct further examinations to determine the cause of death.
