The news about the unstable and deteriorating health condition of the 88 year old Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, begun to emerge after receiving hemodialysis treatment.

News about the king's health is closely monitored in Thailand, where King Bhumibol is widely revered, and the wording of palace statements on his health is intensely scrutinized.

According to the statement issued by the Royal Household Bureau on late Sunday , a ventilator was used after the King's blood |pressure dipped following procedures to prepare him for long-term hemodialysis treatment and to change a tube that drains fluid from his spine.

It is unusual for the palace to state that the king's health is not stable. Statements on his health are usually issued after the monarch's condition shows improvement or when he is recovering from an illness.

Strict laws protecting the royal family stifles any public discussion of the king's health.

The king has been treated for various ailments over the past year at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital - his home for much of the past year - and was last seen in public on Jan. 11, when he spent several hours visiting his palace in the Thai capital.

Anxiety over the king's health and an eventual succession has formed the backdrop to more than a decade of bitter political divide in Thailand that has included two military coups and often-violent street demonstrations.

In the meantime the Thai social networkers express concern for His Majesty’ unstable health condition.

Thais have posted “Long Live the King” messages across social media to show their caring concerns for their much-beloved His Majesty the King.

The messages have flooded Facebook and Twitter during the past two days, after the Royal Household Bureau released the latest statement on the monarch's health on Sunday.

Social media users have also posted prayers and called on everyone to pray for His Majesty to have good health.

Throughout his seven-decade-long reign, the King has devoted himself to his people and country. To Thais, he is the much-revered paternal figure and soul of the nation.

In recent years, His Majesty has spent much of his time at Siriraj Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for health conditions.

But he has not been seen in public for nearly a year now. And his health has been a subject of great concern for Thais.

Kneeling before the statue of HRH Princess Sri Nagarindra, the Princess Mother, at Siriraj Hospital yesterday was a 54-year-old Bangkok resident. "I am praying that His Majesty will quickly recover from his illnesses," she said.

The woman said she became so worried about the King after learning of the latest statement concerning his health.

"I have always prayed for their Majesties the King and the Queen," she said.

Yesterday evening, many people had also gathered at temples to pray for their King.
